OVERRATED MOVIES: ALIEN (1979) →

Oh dear, this new segment is going to cause some considerable controversy. I’ve been feeling lately that there are a lot of movies that I personally don’t get why they are so highly rated. Now, of course, this doesn’t mean that everybody likes the movie, but there is a trend in the general public that seems to hold a certain movie extremely highly. I’m not saying that anyone who likes these movies is wrong, but I just don’t agree with the sentiment. I am going to throw caution to the wind and say that the “classic” Alien is overrated. Yes, this is coming from the guy who loves Titanic more than anything in the world.

The premise is extremely simple, so try to follow me: People are in a spaceship, they land on a planet, and VERY SLOWLY discover the presence of an alien race. Alien was directed by Ridley Scott and stars Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, and Ian Holm. Since I just mentioned the actors, let’s go ahead and start there. Sigourney Weaver…there are few people to me who are more annoying. I don’t think she has any sort of acting chops to speak of and she is mostly just a bitch the whole movie. If playing a mean-spirited and empty woman is great acting, she’s an absolute star. Sorry. Weaver did nothing but irritate me the entire film and she, along with Julia Roberts and Sandra Bullock, is an actress who I cannot stand to see any more in a movie. The rest of the cast, well, they didn’t really have to do much. Veronica Cartwright is almost as terrible as Sigourney Weaver and the male actors really don’t do anything at all. Let’s just move on, because I think I’m really making some people angry here.

‘MADAGASCAR’ SPIN-OFF MOVIE TO BE DIRECTED BY SIMON SMITH →

Everyone remembers the penguins from Madagascar. The conniving quartet of somewhat-crazy, completely-hilarious penguins were so popular as secondary characters that following the release of the movies, the Nickelodeon network picked them up for their own TV Show, The Penguins of Madagascar.

Dream Works Animation has now revealed that the penguins will now be starring in their own movie, directed by Simon Smith, who was a co-director of the production company’s 2007 movie, The Bee Movie.

HIGHLIGHT: BUCK (2011) →

Documentaries seem to have fallen behind the mainstream motion pictures and action packed blockbusters but Buck still found a way to collect 12 Film Festival Awards. “Buck” tells a story of one man who changed the way horse trainers and riders handle their horses forever.

WEEKLY SPOTLIGHT: RYAN GOSLING →

The boys want to be him and the girls want to sleep with him. No, I’m not talking about Jacob from this summer’s Crazy, Stupid, Love. It’s Ryan Gosling, the actor playing him, who the girls want to wrap their legs around.

Gosling has been on the big screen for over ten years, with his most memorable roles being Alan in Remember the Titans (2000), Lars Lindstrom in Lars and the Real Girl (2007), Dean in Blue Valentine (2010), and of course, the hopelessly romantic Noah in The Notebook (2004).

But it’s not any of those roles that have the girls keeling over in titillation. The character that finally did it for Gosling was Jacob. With impeccable taste and smooth lines, Jacob was the quintessential ladies man. So what character is next for the actor who’s proven himself time and time again in both romance and drama?

We can  next see Ryan in this October’s The Ides of March as a presidential candidate’s friend and staff member. The movie is also written by, directed by, and starring George Clooney. Here, Gosling’s character, Stephen, is ultimately led to deceit and betrayal. This is another dramatic role for Gosling and is likely to receive much acclaim.

Whether he’s kissing in the rain (The Notebook), in love with a doll (Lars), or playing the guitar in his goofy voice (Blue Valentine), it’s no doubt that we can definitely expect nothing less than more spotlight-stealing performances by Ryan Gosling, an actor who has proven himself to be well on his way to the role that will one day land him an Oscar.
